According to media reports, this initiative may be implemented after the completion of the investigation related to the former Duke of York. Members of Parliament, including those from the Liberal Democrats and the Scottish National Party, have expressed their willingness to support this bill if it is proposed. At the same time, some Labour Party MPs have expressed doubts about the appropriateness of this step, claiming that the likelihood of Prince Andrew returning to the throne is extremely low.
Currently, Prince Andrew is eighth in line to the British throne, although he was previously stripped of his royal titles amid a scandal related to his connections with American financier Jeffrey Epstein. British authorities have previously stated that they do not intend to make changes to the succession laws.
To change the order of succession, a separate law must be passed, which must be approved by both houses of Parliament and agreed upon with other Commonwealth countries where the British monarch is the king. The last changes to the succession legislation were made in 2013, and the last exclusion from the line of succession occurred in 1936 when former King Edward VIII and his descendants were removed.
On February 19, Prince Andrew was detained on suspicion of abuse of office; however, he was released approximately 11 hours later. During the same days, searches were conducted at several addresses associated with him, which, according to media reports, may continue until February 23.
