The first elections after the mass protests were held in Bangladesh. The Nationalist Party won

According to CNN, the vote count showed that the BNP and its allies will occupy 209 out of 300 seats in parliament.

Despite its victory, the BNP stated that it would not hold celebrations and called on the citizens of Bangladesh to pray for the well-being of the country.

The coalition led by the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami came in second, securing 68 seats in the new parliament.

It is also worth noting that the National Civil Party, formed by leaders of the 2024 student protests that led to the ousting of the Awami League, will receive 30 mandates.

The leader of the BNP is Tariq Rahman, the son of Ziaur Rahman, a former president of Bangladesh, and the first female prime minister Khaleda Zia. He has been in exile since 2008, following the rise to power of the Awami League. Tariq Rahman is expected to become the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Alongside the elections, a referendum on constitutional changes was held in the country, which included the establishment of a neutral interim government during the electoral process, the introduction of a bicameral parliament, an increase in women's representation, and a limitation of the prime minister's term to two. Although the results of the referendum have not yet been officially announced, local media report that over 70% of voters expressed support for the changes.

In the summer of 2024, significant student protests took place in Bangladesh, leading to the overthrow of the ruling Awami League party. As a result, its leader, Sheikh Hasina, was forced to leave her position as prime minister and the country. In November 2025, she was sentenced in absentia to death for crimes against humanity related to the suppression of protests in 2024.
