The snowstorms that began on January 20 affected the entire country, and even Tokyo was covered in snow for the first time in many years. Earlier reports indicated 35 victims and over 400 injured.
According to the authorities, most of the victims were trying to clear the roofs of their homes or adjacent areas of snow, resulting in loss of balance. The highest number of fatalities was recorded in Niigata Prefecture — 17 people. Approximately 193 injured individuals sustained serious injuries.
As reported by The Guardian, in 15 out of 47 prefectures in Japan, snow cover reached up to 2 meters in some areas. More than 1,700 homes in Aomori Prefecture were left without electricity, and flights and train services were canceled. The work of emergency services, including ambulances, has been hampered by the snow. Japanese authorities are warning of possible new accidents that may occur due to rising temperatures and melting snow.
