Iranian Nobel laureate sentenced to 7.5 years in prison in her homeland

Narges Mohammadi, a 53-year-old activist, was sentenced to 6 years for "participating in assemblies and conspiracy to commit crimes," as well as 1.5 years for propaganda. After her release from prison, she will be prohibited from leaving the country for two years, and she must spend another two years in the city of Khusf.

Mohammadi was detained on December 12, 2025, at the memorial for human rights lawyer Khosrow Alikordi. On February 2, she declared a hunger strike in protest. According to her lawyer Nili, she was hospitalized a few days before the verdict was announced due to deteriorating health but was then returned to custody. The lawyer hopes that her health will allow for her temporary release on bail for medical treatment.

Mohammadi holds the position of Vice President of the Center for Human Rights Defenders of Iran and has faced arrests over the past two decades due to her human rights and journalistic activities, as well as her criticism of the authorities. She has been detained a total of 13 times.

Excluding the new sentence, her total prison term amounts to 31 years, of which she has already spent about 10 years in prison. In 2021, she was sentenced to 2.5 years for "anti-state propaganda," and in December 2024, she was temporarily released due to health issues.

Supporters of Mohammadi report that during her years of imprisonment, she suffered several heart attacks, and in 2022, she underwent emergency surgery. At the end of 2024, a bone formation was discovered, which was subsequently removed.
