The scandal is related to the leak of secret information
Morgan McSweeney, who headed Prime Minister Keir Starmer's administration, has resigned.
The reason for his decision was a high-profile scandal involving Peter Mandelson. This was reported by both The Guardian and Sky News.
The scandal erupted after the U.S. Department of Justice released new documents in the Jeffrey Epstein case, which mention Mandelson's name. According to Sky News, the materials discuss a possible transfer of confidential information to Epstein when Mandelson held a government position in the UK, as reported by TRT in Russian.
McSweeney admitted that he was the one who suggested to Keir Starmer to appoint Mandelson as ambassador to the U.S., but now he considers that decision to be wrong.
“The appointment of Peter Mandelson was a mistake. It harmed our party, our country, and undermined trust in politics,” McSweeney stated.
Keir Starmer, for his part, expressed gratitude for McSweeney's cooperation but did not comment on the scandal itself. According to Sky News, opinions about McSweeney in the Labour Party were divided, with some MPs believing that he was sidelining the party's left wing.
Peter Mandelson was dismissed from his position as the UK ambassador to the U.S. in September, and a few days ago he left the Labour Party. The Guardian reported that the reason was information from the "Epstein files" about a possible payment of $75,000 to Mandelson from a financier.
Jeffrey Epstein served time for organizing prostitution in 2008-2009. In July 2019, he was arrested on charges of coercing minors into prostitution.
In August of the same year, Epstein was found dead in his prison cell in Manhattan. In December 2025, the first part of the documents related to his case was published.
Previously published materials also indicated Epstein's connections with several well-known figures, including British Prince Andrew, who subsequently lost his royal title.
