President Trump announced his proposal on the social network Truth Social. He emphasized that during his first presidential term, he significantly updated the U.S. armed forces, including the introduction of new and modernized nuclear systems.
“I was able to prevent nuclear conflicts between Pakistan and India, Iran and Israel, as well as Russia and Ukraine. Instead of extending the New START Treaty, which was poorly negotiated and is still being violated, I propose to engage our nuclear experts to create a new, more effective, and modern agreement that can operate on a long-term basis,” Trump stated.
The New START Treaty was signed on April 8, 2010, and entered into force on February 5, 2011, and in February 2021, its validity was extended for five years. Yesterday, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced the expiration of this treaty.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres characterized the current situation as “a difficult moment for international security” and called on the parties to immediately begin negotiations on a new mechanism for nuclear arms control.
