According to Trump, during discussions with Modi, they touched on topics of trade and the peaceful resolution of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. "He [Modi] agreed to stop purchasing oil from Russia and to increase supplies from the U.S., and possibly from Venezuela. This will be an important step towards ending the war in Ukraine," Trump noted in his message on Truth Social.
The U.S. President also announced the commencement of a new trade agreement between the two countries. Under the agreements reached, the U.S. will reduce import tariffs for India from 25% to 18%, while the Indian side agreed to further reduce its tariffs and non-tariff barriers to zero.
As part of this agreement, India committed to purchasing American goods, including energy resources, coal, and agricultural products, worth over $500 billion.
"Our wonderful relationship with India will only strengthen. Prime Minister Modi and I are two people who really take action, unlike most," Trump added.
Prime Minister Modi, commenting on the results of the negotiations on platform X, expressed gratitude to Trump for the reduction of tariffs; however, the issue of stopping the purchase of Russian oil was not mentioned.
This agreement was the result of several months of intense trade discussions between the U.S. and India, as reported by Reuters.
Recall that in August 2025, Trump imposed additional tariffs on goods from India, pointing out that New Delhi continued to purchase oil from Moscow. In early 2026, he threatened to increase tariffs if India did not stop these purchases.
During the negotiations, Indian companies alternated between suspending and resuming purchases of Russian oil, which also depended on U.S. sanctions against "Lukoil" and "Rosneft."
