The Min family, managing Laukkai, turned this troubled town into a center of gambling and fraud, leading to a significant number of victims due to their illegal activities. In 2023, after the family's arrest by Myanmar authorities, they were handed over to Chinese law enforcement, as part of a large-scale crackdown initiated under pressure from Beijing, which is their main ally.
Due to their fraudulent operations in Myanmar, thousands of Chinese citizens became victims, many of whom were illegally trafficked to these establishments, where they were forced to scam people abroad. Last year, a case involving a little-known actor circulated on the internet in China, who, upon arriving in Thailand for filming, found himself trapped in a fraud scheme in Myanmar. These incidents heightened discontent in Beijing, where authorities have long demanded that Myanmar's ruling junta take action against organized crime.
According to the verdict, the financial flows generated from the Min family's illegal operations and gambling establishments amounted to over 10 billion yuan (approximately 1.4 billion USD or 1 billion GBP) from 2015 to 2023.
As a result of the crimes committed by this group, 14 Chinese citizens lost their lives, and many others were injured, as stated in the court ruling.
