In the new document, it is stated that by January 2025, the United States expects a deterioration in the situation regarding global and regional security, an increase in China's influence, weakening alliances, threats in the Western Hemisphere, and the possibility of major conflicts arising simultaneously. The main goal of the strategy is to concentrate resources on priority security areas.
Main highlights of the strategy:
- Protection of American borders: strengthening border and airspace security, developing missile defense and counter-drone systems, maintaining nuclear deterrence, cyber defense, and combating international terrorism. The importance of protecting U.S. interests in the Western Hemisphere, including access to the Panama Canal and Greenland, is also emphasized.
- Containment of China in the Indo-Pacific region: creating a strategic balance of power without direct confrontation, strengthening defense along the First Island Chain, establishing military communications with China to prevent escalation, and actively cooperating with regional allies.
- Redistribution of defense responsibilities: U.S. partners and allies must take a more active role in ensuring their own security. A target level of defense spending has been set at 5% of GDP (3.5% for military needs and 1.5% for other security aspects).
- Development of the defense industry: accelerating the recovery and expansion of American defense production, implementing advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, removing regulatory barriers, and collaborating with industrial partners of allies.
Pentagon representatives emphasize that the implementation of the new strategy should reduce the risk of major conflicts and ensure long-term security for both the United States and its partners.
