The U.S. is considering a complete ban on oil supplies to Cuba
As reported by Politico, a possible ban on oil imports would be another step in escalating the conflict, especially after Trump's recent statement about his intention to stop the supply of Venezuelan oil to the Cuban authorities, which is one of the main sources of resources for Cuba. Earlier in January, Trump also posted on social media: "Cuba will no longer receive any oil or money - nothing! I strongly recommend that they make a deal before it’s too late."
Cuba is currently experiencing a severe energy crisis, which became particularly acute in the fall of 2024 when the island faced widespread power outages, and residents were forced to stand in long lines for fuel and food. The country's economy, weakened by years of sanctions from the U.S., is in a deep crisis not seen in decades.
Venezuela has been supplying Cuba with oil at reduced prices for many years, in exchange for which the Cuban government sends medical personnel, trainers, and security specialists there. Discussions of new restrictions from the U.S. could worsen the situation in Cuba, which is related to the increasing pressure from Washington on Caracas and changes in supply conditions.
