According to information published by the National Bureau of Statistics of China on Monday, the country's population at the end of 2025 was 1.404 billion people, which represents a decrease of 3.39 million compared to the previous year. This was reported by RIA Novosti.
The data shows that in 2025, excluding residents of Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, as well as foreign citizens, the population of China was 1.404 billion people, which is 3.39 million less than in 2024. The birth rate in the country in 2025 was 5.63 per thousand, while the death rate reached 8.04 per thousand.

Regarding gender composition, in 2025, the number of men in China was 716.85 million, while women numbered 688.04 million, according to the bureau's information.

The age distribution of the population is also of interest. In the age group from 16 to 59 years, there are 851.36 million people, which accounts for 60.6% of the total population. At the same time, 323.38 million people, or 23% of the total, are aged over 60, of which 223.65 million are in the age group of 65 and older, corresponding to 15.9% of the entire population of China.

According to the bureau, by 2025, the urban population reached 953.8 million people, an increase of 10.3 million compared to 2024. At the same time, the rural population decreased by 13.69 million, and now urban residents make up 67.89% of the total population of the country.

China is facing serious demographic challenges, including gender imbalance and an aging population. One of the reasons for these issues has been the "one family - one child" policy introduced in the late 1970s, under which cities were allowed to have only one child, while in rural areas, two were permitted if the first was a girl.
