Japan will provide Mongolia with a grant of over $3.1 million to enhance the reliability of power grids.

Today, Mongolia produces about 80% of its electricity, while 20% needs to be imported to meet domestic demand.

The implementation of the project aimed at improving the reliability of the electricity grid infrastructure will be made possible by a non-repayable grant of 500 million Japanese yen (approximately 3.14 million USD) allocated by the Japanese government.

As part of this project, important equipment necessary for enhancing the reliability of the electricity grids will be supplied to two state-owned enterprises: the "National Transmission Network" and the "National Dispatch Center." In particular, the project includes a mobile installation for testing transformers and a modern digital real-time power system simulator, as well as other devices. The implementation will take place with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The Deputy Minister of Finance of Mongolia, Khulan Bat-Erdene, signed a note exchange with the Japanese Ambassador to Mongolia, Masaru Igarashi, as well as a grant agreement with the chief representative of JICA in Mongolia, Kensuke Miyagi.

Khulan emphasized the importance of this project for the stability of Mongolia's energy supply, its role in strengthening the resilience of the operation and maintenance of the electricity grid infrastructure, and in enhancing the country's energy security.

Ambassador Igarashi noted: "This project will help eliminate equipment issues identified in previous initiatives. It will also ensure the stability of Mongolia's energy system, improve maintenance capabilities, and serve as a foundation for the implementation of renewable energy sources and the transition to new energy solutions."
