Maya Sandu Allowed the Unification of Moldova and Romania in a Referendum
She justified her position by the need to protect Moldova from pressure from Russia.
The president noted: "In the current conditions, it is becoming increasingly difficult for a small country like Moldova to maintain democracy and sovereignty, as well as to resist Russia."
Sandu has repeatedly accused Moscow of attempting to interfere in Moldova's affairs.
According to Reuters, about 1.5 million out of 2.4 million citizens of Moldova hold Romanian citizenship; however, surveys show that only a third of the population supports the idea of uniting the two countries.
She also acknowledged that her views are not shared by the majority of citizens. In her opinion, a more realistic path for Moldova is joining the European Union.
The goal of the current government of Moldova is to join the EU by 2030, which will require significant reforms in the country.
