Moscow was hit by one of the most powerful snowfalls in 146 years

According to the press service of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, the snowfall that occurred on January 9 became one of the five strongest in the history of meteorological observations. According to data from the VDNH meteorological station, 21.4 mm of precipitation fell in Moscow over the course of a day, which is almost 40% of the monthly norm.

Only a few times during the winter period have stronger snowfalls been recorded: on February 4, 2018 (24.2 mm), December 14, 1981 (23.2 mm), January 8, 1970 (23.0 mm), and December 12, 2022 (22.6 mm).

After the snowfall ended, the snow cover in Moscow reached 30–38 cm, while in the Moscow region it reached up to 51 cm, especially at the Cherusti meteorological station.

The Hydrometeorological Center noted that over 146 years of observations, there have been 24 instances of snowfalls with precipitation exceeding 15 mm. On average, strong snowfalls occur in the capital approximately once every five to six years.
