From April 6 to 12, 2023, the Asian Wrestling Championship will take place in Bishkek at the "Zhashtyk" arena. The competitions will be divided into three stages: Greco-Roman wrestling from April 6 to 8, freestyle wrestling on April 9 and 10, and then women's wrestling on April 11 and 12. In anticipation of this important event, the "Kabar" agency conducted an interview with Melis Tobokelov, the director of the Directorate for Olympic Sports.

— Melis Saqayevich, what are the current steps in preparing for the Asian Championship in Kyrgyzstan?

— The preparation is going actively. We have created an organizing committee, and all aspects, including the sports part, logistics, accreditation, security, and media, are being monitored according to the established schedule. All actions are coordinated in accordance with the requirements of the International Wrestling Federation UWW.

— The "Zhashtyk" arena was chosen to host the competitions. Does it meet the standards for a championship of this level?

— Yes, the "Zhashtyk" arena meets all UWW requirements. All necessary elements, such as the placement of wrestling mats, lighting, media and television infrastructure, as well as warm-up rooms, weigh-in areas, and call rooms, are organized according to international standards.

— How many countries and athletes are expected at the championship? How is the reception of guests organized?

— We expect participation from over 20 countries with hundreds of athletes. Hotels of 3-4 star level are provided for the delegations, as well as full transportation, catering, and logistics support. All guest reception activities are organized in accordance with international standards.

— How many representatives from Kyrgyzstan will be at the championship and how was the national team formed?

— The national team was formed based on the results of the Kyrgyzstan Championship, which took place at the beginning of the year, as well as on the basis of international ranking tournaments. In cases where additional verification was needed, qualifying matches were held to determine the strongest.

Composition of the national team:

freestyle wrestling — 10 athletes;

Greco-Roman wrestling — 10 athletes;

women's wrestling — 9 athletes.

Thus, in each weight category, Kyrgyzstan will be represented by the strongest and most experienced wrestlers.
