If Iran decides to withdraw from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, its national team may face sanctions from FIFA.
The President of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, previously expressed doubts about the team's participation in the tournament, noting that "the country cannot optimistically await the World Cup."
According to FIFA rules, national associations are not allowed to withdraw from the tournament after confirming their participation. In the event of a withdrawal, the federation will be required to return all funds received from FIFA for preparation and may face a fine ranging from €275,000 to €555,000.
Additionally, FIFA's disciplinary committee may take further measures, including suspending participation in future international tournaments.
Earlier, former U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he is "indifferent" to whether Iran participates in the World Cup.
The Iranian national team has already competed in six World Cups, including tournaments in Brazil, Russia, and Qatar. In the 2026 World Cup, the Iranian team is scheduled to be in Group G along with New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt.
