Verhuven: Fury Suggested a Fight Idea with Usyk
Rico Verhoeven, former Glory heavyweight champion, shared how the concept of his fight with Alexander Usyk, holder of the WBC, WBA, IBO, and IBF titles, was born.
It is expected that on May 23 in Egypt, as part of the boxing evening The Ring: Glory in Giza, they will meet in the ring for the WBC heavyweight title.
“At first, we had a fight scheduled with Anthony Joshua, but due to the tragedy involving his friends, that bout was postponed. My coach Peter Fury suggested, ‘Why not fight Usyk?’ I found the idea interesting, but I wasn’t sure if it would suit Alexander. We reached out to his team, and everything started to come together. I learned that Usyk is ready for the fight and interested,” Verhoeven said in an interview with DAZN.
Usyk last stepped into the ring in July 2025, where he won against Daniel Dubois, knocking him out in the fifth round. He has a record of 24 wins (15 by knockout) and no losses.
As for Verhoeven, his last fight took place in June 2025 at Glory 100, where he defeated Artem Vakhitov by unanimous decision. In kickboxing, he has 66 wins (21 by knockout) and 10 losses.
