First medals, records, and scandal: how the first day of the Winter Olympics in Italy went
The first day of the Winter Olympics in Italy will be remembered for many bright events, including the winning of the first gold medals and the setting of Olympic records, alongside a high-profile doping scandal. The first gold of the Games went to 24-year-old Swiss skier Franyo von Allmen, who won the men's downhill event. On the famous Stelvio course, he reached a speed of 145 km/h and recorded the best time of 1:51.61, ahead of Italians Giovanni Franzoni and Dominik Paris. After crossing the finish line, the athlete shared his secret to success, noting that the main thing is to enjoy skiing and maintain a calm mindset.

Later that same day, the gold in the women's skiathlon was won by Swedish athlete Frida Karlsson. The silver medal went to her compatriot Ebba Andersson, while the bronze was claimed by Norwegian Heidi Weng. Frida emphasized that her victory is the result of many years of work by the team and coaches.

The Japanese delegation also attracted public attention during the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics. Japanese athletes took to the stage not only with their national flag but also with the flag of the host country, which many spectators perceived as a gesture of respect towards the organizers of the Games.
