The main theme of the ceremony was "Armonia" (Harmony).
After the parade of athletes, welcoming speeches were delivered by the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, and the President of the International Olympic Committee, Kirsty Coventry. The Olympic flame was lit in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.
