Emma Raducanu withdrew from the match against Naomi Osaka at the United Cup
At the United Cup team tournament taking place in Perth, 23-year-old Raducanu decided not to take to the court, fearing for her physical condition. This information was reported by Reuters.
Emma was set to play her first official match since October, continuing her preparations for the Australian Open. However, the captain of the British team, Tim Henman, stated that it was decided not to risk the athlete's health.
Henman noted that "she was very close to playing," adding that it was a difficult decision. "Emma has been training well and regaining her form, but we concluded that it is still too early for her to go on court," the captain emphasized in an interview with the Australian channel Nine.
Although local media report an injury as the reason for her withdrawal, official details have not been disclosed. Henman also expressed hope that Raducanu would be able to play in the tournament in the future.
Since her triumphant victory at the US Open in 2021, Raducanu has faced numerous issues regarding her form and health. Last season, she reached the quarterfinals of the tournament in Miami but then ended her season early due to physical problems.
In their next group stage match, the British team will play against the Greek team. It is also worth noting that Jack Draper is absent from the team as he is recovering from a left arm injury.
The Australian Open starts on January 18 and will run until February 1.
