Gulshaiyr Abdirasulova addressed issues of torture and inaction of law enforcement agencies
The human rights activist Gulshaiyr Abdirasulova reported receiving a letter from the akyn Askat Zhetigen, who is currently in prison. She noted that he is doing well, teaching other inmates to play the komuz, and his songs still resonate with people.
However, she also emphasized the serious circumstances surrounding his case.
Abdirasulova claims that during Zhetigen's detention at the GKNB in Bishkek, he became a victim of torture, including physical violence, the use of a taser, and suffocation. She stressed that for more than two and a half years, no criminal case has been initiated regarding these facts, although she knows the names of those involved.
In her address, the human rights activist raises a broader range of issues related to law enforcement practices. In particular, she discusses the reasons for the detention of convicted individuals such as Kanykey Aranova and Adilet Baltabay, as well as why their cases have not yet been reviewed and why those who may have been involved in fabricating charges have not been held accountable.
In a letter dated March 26, 2026, Askat Zhetigen addresses his compatriots and relatives, using folk wisdom. He states that even after finding himself "like a bird in a cage" for his pursuit of truth, he has not changed his beliefs and continues to advocate for justice.
Zhetigen also emphasizes that he endures all trials with fortitude and notes that his creativity continues to thrive despite his imprisonment: his songs resonate and inspire the youth. He believes that his work finds a response in society.
Moreover, he speaks about the significance of his ancestors' legacy, their feats, and teachings, which remain a guiding light for him. In conclusion, Zhetigen expresses hope for a soon reunion with his loved ones and confidence that his service to the people lies ahead, sending warm greetings and sincere respect.
