During restoration work at a church in Maastricht, a skeleton was found belonging to a person buried under the altar. This suggests a high social status. The grave also contained a fragment of a musket ball and a French coin, as reported by the Dutch publication NOS.

The remains have been sent for DNA analysis, and researchers speculate that it could be Charles de Batz de Castelmore d'Armanac — the captain of the musketeers at the court of French King Louis XIV and the prototype of the character in Alexandre Dumas' novel "The Three Musketeers." Historically, it is known that d'Armanac died during the siege of Maastricht in 1673, likely from a musket ball to the throat or chest. The location of his burial remained unknown until now.

Wim Dijkman, an archaeologist involved in the excavation, expressed caution in his conclusions: "So far, there is nothing that could refute the assumption that it might be him. But I am waiting for the results of the DNA analysis," he noted in an interview with NOS.
