Very soon, in August 2026, a new wastewater treatment plant will be launched in Karakol. This was reported by the press center of the local administration.
Initially, the plant will have a capacity of 12,000 cubic meters per day, which will serve about 75,000 residents of the city. Subsequently, upon completion of the second phase of construction in 2027, the capacity will increase to 24,000 cubic meters, ensuring wastewater treatment for 150,000 people when fully connected to the sewage network.
Currently, construction work is in the final stages, with the main structures completed, including aeration tanks, settling tanks, and an administrative building with a laboratory. Commissioning tests are planned for May 2026.
Currently, only 35–40 percent of the facilities in Karakol are connected to the centralized sewage system. After the new plant opens, local authorities intend to raise this figure to 100 percent. Additionally, the city has already expanded the sewage networks by 12.7 kilometers.
The construction is being carried out with the support of the Asian Development Bank, aimed at improving sanitary conditions in Karakol and reducing the negative impact on the environment.
