The unexpected dismissal of Melis Turgunbaev from the position of chairman of the National Bank may be linked to a large-scale investigation into corruption schemes at OJSC "Kyrgyzneftegaz." This was reported by political scientist Musurkul Kabyldekov in an interview with the publication 24.kg.
According to Kabyldekov, during the investigation of multi-billion embezzlements, law enforcement agencies are questioning everyone who could have been involved in the case during the relevant period. Given that Melis Turgunbaev held high positions in "Kyrgyzneftegaz" for many years, his summons to the investigator seems almost inevitable.
“The head of the National Bank cannot be a witness in a criminal case, which seriously undermines the reputation of the main financial regulator of the country. It is likely that his resignation was initiated in advance to avoid negative consequences for the National Bank due to possible investigative actions,” Kabyldekov suggested.
