The Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic proposed to raise prices on chips and sugary drinks
The Ministry of Health has initiated an increase in excise taxes on chips, snacks, crackers, and sugary drinks to reduce their consumption among youth. The project has been brought to discussion with the participation of citizens, international organizations, and government structures.
The agency proposes to change the existing system, under which the excise tax on sugary drinks is 3 soms, and implement a new differentiated model based on sugar content:
- up to 5 grams of sugar per 100 milliliters — 5 soms per liter;
- from 5 to 8 grams — 7 soms per liter;
- from 8 to 11 grams — 9 soms per liter;
- more than 11 grams — 11 soms per liter.
This initiative aims to encourage producers to reduce the sugar level in their drinks and promote healthier habits among consumers.
Additionally, it is proposed to introduce a fixed excise tax of 20 soms per liter on energy drinks, considering their high sugar and caffeine content, as well as the potential negative impact on the health of adolescents.
Similar measures may also be applied to products with high salt content, such as chips and snacks.
