Deputy fears acid rains in Kyrgyzstan due to events in the Middle East

Mahabat Mavlyanova proposed to strengthen monitoring of potential environmental risks

At a meeting of the parliamentary committee dealing with agricultural policy and environmental protection, Deputy Mahabat Mavlyanova expressed her concerns about the possible emergence of acid rains in Kyrgyzstan. These concerns are related to the ongoing geopolitical events in the Middle East.

She noted that strikes on oil refineries in this region could lead to the release of chemicals into the atmosphere, which, in turn, could negatively impact the ecology in other countries.

“There is information about the release of harmful chemicals following attacks on oil refining facilities. We have reason to fear that acid rains may form as a result of precipitation,” Mavlyanova emphasized.

The deputy also inquired about the existence of systems in Kyrgyzstan capable of tracking such environmental phenomena and identifying regions potentially susceptible to acid rains. She suggested initiating a discussion on this issue at the government level and increasing attention to monitoring environmental risks.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision Asel Raimkulova responded that the ministry does not conduct such monitoring. She explained that the "Kyrgyzhydromet" service monitors atmospheric processes using automated stations.
