During the meeting of the committee on agrarian policy, water resources, and ecology held on March 9, Deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh Mahabat Mavlyanova (District No. 3) raised a concerning issue about the potential pollution of the atmosphere and the risk of acid rain caused by geopolitical events.

The agenda included a report from the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision for 2025.

Mavlyanova noted that current geopolitical conflicts could negatively impact the environment, including in Kyrgyzstan. She cited examples of reports indicating that after attacks on oil refineries in the Middle East, hazardous chemicals may have entered the atmosphere.

“Recent strikes by Israel on Iranian oil refineries have led to chemical emissions into the atmosphere. There are concerns that precipitation could result in acid rain,” the deputy stated.

She also inquired whether there are resources in Kyrgyzstan for monitoring such phenomena and whether it is possible to determine which regions might be at risk of such precipitation.

In response, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources Asel Raimkulova stated that the ministry does not conduct such monitoring. However, the service "Kyrgyzhydromet" carries out observations of atmospheric processes and has automated meteorological stations.

In conclusion, Mavlyanova suggested bringing this issue to the government meeting to discuss the possibility of a more in-depth assessment of environmental risks.
