Women of Kyrgyzstan in numbers: more than half of the population live longer than men
Every year on March 8, International Women's Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, officially established by the United Nations in 1975. This day symbolizes the struggle for women's rights, equality of opportunities, and international solidarity.

According to the National Statistical Committee, as of the beginning of 2026, the total population of Kyrgyzstan was 7.4 million people. The population structure shows a slight predominance of women, whose share exceeds 50%. The average age of women is 30 years, while for men it is 28 years.
The life expectancy of women in Kyrgyzstan exceeds that of men — in 2024, it was 77 years for women and 68 years for men.
One of the reasons for this gap is the significantly higher mortality rate among men, which is 1.6 times higher than that of women.

The youth structure of the population also influences marital relationships. In 2024, more than 45,000 women got married, and 87% of them were doing so for the first time. The largest share of first marriages occurs at the age of 18-29, accounting for almost 87% of the total number of women marrying for the first time.
The average age for a first marriage for women is 24 years, while for a second marriage it is 35 years.
On average, each woman in Kyrgyzstan gives birth to about three children. Despite the decrease in the number of newborns — from 158,000 in 2020 to 140,000 in 2024, the birth rate remains above the level of simple reproduction, contributing to population growth.

Women also play an important role in the country's economy. In 2024, the employment rate of women of working age was 48.7%, and the average age of working women was 41 years. They are most often employed in the fields of education, healthcare, social services, hospitality and restaurant business, as well as in trade.

However, there is a gender pay gap. According to studies from 2025, the average salary of women is only 65.7% of men's salaries, which is related to the distribution of sectors.
In the field of education, there is also a predominance of women. At the beginning of the 2024/2025 academic year, about 87% of teachers in schools are women.
Among students, there are also more girls: in 2024, their share in secondary vocational educational institutions exceeded 58%, while in universities it was about 55%.

Women spend a significant amount of time on household chores: on average, this amounts to 4 hours and 40 minutes a day, which corresponds to more than 19% of their time. For men, this figure is more than five times lower. Rural women devote about 5 hours a day to household duties, while in cities it is approximately 4 hours.

Despite being busy with work and household chores, women find time for leisure, spending an average of about 2 hours and 20 minutes a week on active recreation.
