Starting from March 1 of this year, changes regarding the grounds for the dismissal of foreign workers will come into effect in Russia. Now, employers will be able to terminate labor contracts with migrants in the event of regional restrictions on their employment.

Previously, the Labor Code of the Russian Federation considered only federal restrictions as grounds for the dismissal of foreigners. The new amendments add decisions made at the level of the subjects of the Federation to this list.

The federal law "On Amendments to Article 327.6 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation" was signed and came into effect today.

The explanatory note to the draft law mentions that in 2025, regions such as the Moscow region, Krasnodar Krai, as well as Novgorod and Nizhny Novgorod regions had restrictions on attracting foreign labor working under patents in certain industries.

In such situations, employers risked facing fines of up to 1 million rubles or encountering the suspension of their activities for non-compliance with these regulations. Moreover, the dismissal of a migrant could be deemed unlawful with corresponding legal consequences. The new changes eliminate this uncertainty, as noted in official documents.

It is worth noting that since the beginning of 2024, 22 new federal laws aimed at tightening migration policy have been adopted in Russia.
