In Kyrgyzstan, there is an active expansion of the early detection and treatment system for retinopathy of prematurity—a condition that can develop in children born prematurely and, without timely treatment, can lead to complete blindness. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Health, citing ophthalmologist Alina Sagynbekova from the National Center for Maternal and Child Health.

This disease can be diagnosed within the first three weeks of a newborn's life.

All infants born before 35 weeks must be examined by an ophthalmologist.

In Bishkek, such examinations are conducted at the NCMMH, while in the regions, screenings are carried out at central regional hospitals, where medical staff have received specialized training for conducting screenings.

It is important to note that parents cannot independently recognize the development of the disease in its early stages, so consulting specialists in the first weeks of the child's life is critically important.

Starting in 2024, surgeries for the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity began at the NCMMH, marking a new stage in their treatment. The number of children receiving specialized assistance increased from 42 in 2024 to 79 in 2025.

Doctors are now using modern treatment methods, such as laser coagulation and anti-VEGF therapy, the implementation of which has been made possible through the support of the High Technologies Fund of the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as applying combined approaches. This demonstrates a shift towards a more active model of treating retinopathy of prematurity in the country.

Specialists emphasize: every premature child should undergo examinations by an ophthalmologist, ENT specialist, neurologist, and pediatrician. Only a comprehensive approach and early diagnosis can help identify potential problems and preserve the child's health.
