Of the total number of transplants, 42 were performed under related donor programs, while 37 were done on a free-of-charge basis.
According to information from the National Hospital, 67 patients (or 84.8%) have satisfactory transplant function levels.
However, 6 patients (7.6%) had to return to hemodialysis:
- three of them (3.8%, which corresponds to global data of up to 10%) experienced acute transplant rejection,
- while the other three developed chronic post-transplant nephropathy within a year after the surgery.
Unfortunately, six patients (7%) passed away:
- five of them in the late post-transplant period for reasons unrelated to the surgery itself (COVID-19, intestinal tuberculosis, cardiovascular diseases);
- one patient died in the early postoperative period due to an acute myocardial infarction.
It is worth noting that on February 12, 2026, the NCMCH performed its 80th budget-funded kidney transplant surgery. Currently, there are 206 patients with stage five chronic kidney disease waiting for a transplant.
