The U.S. State Department is preparing a portal to bypass internet restrictions - Reuters
According to the agency, the portal will be available at freedom.gov, and its main task is to provide residents of Europe and other regions the ability to circumvent local content blocks.
One of Reuters' informants noted that among the options being discussed was the idea of masking internet traffic to make it appear as if it were originating from the U.S., using VPN technologies. At the same time, it is claimed that U.S. authorities do not plan to track the activities of users of this portal.
The project is led by Deputy Secretary of State Sarah Rogers. Initially, the initiative was set to be presented at the Munich Security Conference, but its presentation has been postponed indefinitely.
Within the State Department, the idea has sparked disagreements. Some employees express concern that users may gain access to materials considered extremist or promoting hate through this resource.
According to estimates by Reuters, the launch of this service could lead to a deterioration in relations between Washington and its European allies, creating the impression that the U.S. encourages citizens of the European Union to ignore local laws.
