According to researcher Alan Jamieson, the team set out on the expedition without any expectations of finding sharks, as the prevailing view holds that these predators are absent in Antarctica. “And this is not just a small shark. It’s a massive creature, a real monster,” he noted.
The shark, measuring 3-4 meters in length, was captured on camera back in January 2025, but information about this discovery has only now come to light.
There was a belief that sharks cannot survive in the conditions typical of Antarctica. However, this individual, presumed to be a polar or sleeper shark, demonstrated excellent well-being in these waters.
Scientists suggest that there may be a small population of such predators in this region, feeding on the remains of whales and giant squids.
