What is pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV?
It is a system for taking antiretroviral medications aimed at preventing HIV infection. With regular and correct use, PrEP can reduce the risk of HIV transmission by more than 90% during sexual contact.
Who is recommended to use PrEP?
This prevention method may be beneficial for individuals at increased risk of HIV infection, including:
- those who have difficulty consistently using condoms with non-regular partners;
- people with multiple sexual partners;
- members of vulnerable populations;
- individuals whose sexual partners are HIV-positive, if their viral load is unknown or not controlled.
How can one obtain PrEP in Kyrgyzstan?
The procedure for obtaining PrEP is simplified and takes minimal time.
Consultation. Contact the Republican Center, Bishkek City, or any regional center for HIV and viral hepatitis control. You can also receive the service from an infectious disease specialist at a Family Medicine Center or at non-profit organizations engaged in HIV prevention.
Testing. Take a free rapid HIV test (medications are prescribed only with a negative result).
Doctor's consultation. The specialist will suggest a convenient regimen for taking the medication (daily or "on demand" for certain groups).
Obtaining. The medications are provided free of charge.
How much does PrEP cost?
This service is free and confidential in all regions of the country.
What else is important to know?
PrEP does not replace condoms, which remain an effective means of protection against most sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies.
The medications for PrEP do not cause HIV and are safe under medical supervision.
Regular HIV testing is an integral part of the PrEP program.
Pre-exposure prophylaxis supports international efforts to reduce new HIV cases and achieve public health goals.
Expanding access to PrEP helps:
- reduce the number of new HIV infections;
- encourage early medical assistance;
- reduce stigma and discrimination;
- ensure the health protection of the population as a whole.
