At the age of 95, Robert Duvall, an Oscar-winning actor known for his roles in iconic films such as 'The Godfather' and 'Apocalypse Now', has passed away.

His wife, Luciana, reported that the actor died on Sunday at his home in Virginia, as confirmed by information from the BBC.

Throughout his career, Duvall won an Oscar in 1984 for his outstanding performance as a country musician in the film 'Tender Mercies'.

The actor was also nominated for this prestigious award six times for supporting roles, including his work in 'The Godfather' and 'Apocalypse Now'. His last nomination was in 2014 when Duvall played a role in the film 'The Judge' at the age of 83.

In Francis Ford Coppola's film 'Apocalypse Now', he portrayed Colonel Bill Kilgore, who became iconic for his love of surfing and a memorable scene with helicopter attacks set to Wagner's music. The line "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" made his character legendary, despite appearing on screen for only a few minutes.

Originally, Kilgore was meant to be more eccentric, but Duvall made changes to soften his character.

One of the actor's favorite roles was Augustus McCrae, a Texas Ranger turned cowboy, in the 1989 miniseries 'Lonesome Dove'.

Robert Duvall made his film debut 63 years ago in the adaptation of 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. In 'The Godfather', he played Tom Hagen, the advisor to the mafia boss.

Luciana Duvall noted in her statement: "To the world, he was an actor, an Oscar winner, a director, and a storyteller. To me, he was everything. His passion for acting was no less than his love for characters, good food, and conversation."
