At the age of 95, actor Robert Duvall, an Oscar winner known for his memorable roles in films such as "The Godfather" and "Apocalypse Now," has passed away, reports the "Russian Service of the BBC."

According to his wife Luciana, the actor died at his home in Virginia this past Sunday.

In 1984, Duvall won the Oscar for Best Actor for his outstanding performance in the film "Tender Mercies," where he portrayed a country musician.

Additionally, he was nominated for an Oscar six times for supporting roles, including in "The Godfather" and "Apocalypse Now." His last nomination came in 2014 when he was 83 years old for the film "The Judge."

In "Apocalypse Now," directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Duvall played Colonel Bill Kilgore, who became an iconic character thanks to the famous scene with helicopter attacks set to Wagner's music.

Although his screen time was minimal, the line "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" made him an icon. Originally, the character was intended to be more eccentric, but Duvall made changes to his personality himself.

One of the actor's favorite roles was that of Augustus McCrae, a Texas ranger turned cowboy, in the miniseries "Lonesome Dove," which aired in 1989.

Duvall began his film career 63 years ago with a role in the adaptation of the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird."

In "The Godfather," he played the role of Tom Hagen, the advisor to the mafia boss.
