In the Kochkorsky district, in the rural administration of Kum-Dobo, there is a village called Buguchu. Our correspondent from Turmush decided to uncover the story behind this unusual name.

Farmer Bolot Asanbekov, a local resident, shared his version of the village's name origin. He spoke about his grandfather, Alban uulu Sydyke, who was born in 1890 and was a well-known falconer with an eagle and two taigans. Sydyke often shared stories about his lineage and the significance of place names, but many of his tales remained only partially remembered by Bolot.

According to him, in the 1700s, the Sarybagysh tribe lived to the east of Kegeti, while the Solto tribe was located to the west. The Cherikchi tribe, to which Bolot's ancestors belonged, lived in the village of Cholpon, above the area of Ken-Bulun. With the arrival of spring, they crossed the Shamshe gorge and found new pastures, such as Sary-Saz, Tarmal-Saz, and Ken-Saz, where they hunted deer and sold their skins.

The villagers used deer skins to build temporary shelters when they could not continue their journey due to bad weather. During one such winter period, they found themselves blocked in the Kerkebes gorge and even in the Boom gorge, where they also could not proceed due to heavy rains. Using deer skins, they built huts and stayed to winter. As soon as the roads became accessible, the tribe returned to their usual ways.

The legend says that those who observed how this tribe used deer skins for housing began to call them "Bughu atkan el," which translates to "the tribe that shoots deer," resulting in the name Buguchu, Bolot recounted.

Currently, the residents of Buguchu are engaged in growing and selling potatoes.
“Previously, there was no market in Kochkor, and people had to travel to Tokmok to sell livestock and buy groceries. One of the first livestock breeders to go to the market was a man who stayed overnight with a girl who married into the Chuy region. She treated her guests to a dish made from dough, and one of the men accidentally swallowed a piece of potato, mistaking it for fat. After that, the girl explained that it was potato, which adds a special flavor to the food, and offered each of them two bags for planting in the spring. Since then, the residents of Buguchu have actively started growing this root vegetable,” Bolot Asanbekov concluded.
