What will happen to the valuable wires that were on the lines?
In Bishkek, the municipal enterprise "Bishkek City Transport" has announced a tender for the demolition of trolleybus poles. The total contract amount is 12 million 46 thousand soms, as reported by Bermet Borubaeva, the founder of the initiative group #BishkekSmog.
She noted that earlier the financial management of the capital claimed that the transfer of 100 trolleybuses to other cities would not entail the expenditure of the local budget. Nevertheless, the dismantling of the necessary infrastructure is being financed from municipal funds.
The fate of the dismantled structures, especially the valuable electrical wires, remains unclear. As of mid-2024, the total length of contact lines in Bishkek reaches 210 km. The cost of laying one kilometer of trolleybus network ranges from 170 to 400 thousand dollars, depending on the region and construction conditions, which is largely explained by the high price of copper.
It is worth reminding that the city hall has decided to eliminate trolleybuses as a mode of public transport. However, according to the new General Plan, the authorities intend to create tram lines in the capital.
