This village in the Kemin district has become one of the centers of the breeding industry in the USSR — how it lives today
The village of Ilyich, founded in 1930, became an important center for livestock breeding from its early years. In 1937, the breeding farm named after Ilyich was established, which became a flagship of breeding work that led to the creation of a new breed of cattle, "Alatau," officially registered in 1950. Currently, the village is continuing to develop its social infrastructure, particularly with the construction of a new institution for 100 children on the site of the old kindergarten.
The head of Library No. 6, Gulayim Tursunalieva, shared with a Turmush correspondent the history of the village of Ilyich. According to her, the village was founded in 1930 and began to develop in its early years due to favorable natural and climatic conditions that facilitated sheep and cattle breeding.
In 1937, breeding animals were brought in from the Kostroma and Smolensk regions of the RSFSR to improve the breed quality of the livestock. That same year, at the initiative of the People's Commissariat, the "Ilyich Breeding Farm" was established, which eventually became one of the leading farms in the region.
Breeding work was carried out over several years, during which local bulls were crossed with imported breeds, and the resulting offspring were raised in special conditions. As a result of this work, a new breed of cattle with a brown coat was developed.
On December 14, 1950, the Council of Ministers of the USSR approved the name "Alatau" for this breed. The main breeding activities took place from 1937 to 1940, and the breeding stock was distributed not only across the union republics, such as Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan, but also beyond the borders of the USSR — to Afghanistan, China, Mongolia, and Korea.
According to the Institute of Animal Husbandry and Pastures of Kyrgyzstan, during the Soviet period, the "Ala-Tuu" breed was actively bred in most regions of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, and the Ilyich Breeding Farm remained one of the key centers for its development.
The village continued to develop actively over the following decades. In 1956, a secondary school (with 10 years of education) and a House of Culture were built, which still functions today. In 1970, a cafeteria and a kindergarten for 140 children were opened. In the 1980s, a large livestock complex for 1,500 heads was built, which provided workers with medical services, showers, and a sauna — considered a high level of social infrastructure at that time.
Unfortunately, during the collapse of the Soviet Union, the kindergarten fell into disrepair and was destroyed. Currently, a new preschool institution for 100 children is being built on its site, and a feldsher-obstetric station and a mosque are also functioning.
The secondary school has been named after Lieutenant General Bakayev Anarbek Kuramaevich, and one of the central streets of the village is named in honor of Koshoyev Omurzak.
During the Great Patriotic War, 210 people from the village went to the front, of whom only 53 returned. This tragic page of history remains an important part of the collective memory of the local residents.
The village of Ilyich has also become the birthplace of several notable individuals:
— Koshoyev Omurzak (1890–1971) — shepherd, Hero of Socialist Labor;
— Sadvakas Kochkimbaev (1898–1971) — brigade leader, awarded the Order of the Red Banner;
— Zhuma Baltabaev — peasant, holder of the Order of Lenin;
— Beyshyke Zhandarov (1937–2006) — honored artist of the Kyrgyz SSR;
— Bakayev Anarbek Kuramaevich (1950–1997) — lieutenant general;
— Sadyrkulov Medet Chakanovich (1954–2009) — extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of the Kyrgyz Republic, public and political figure.
