Late to seek help. Reasons for maternal mortality named by a doctor
“Complications begin even in the prenatal period. Unfortunately, many women do not register for care and only turn to doctors when they are already in critical condition due to a lack of information about the need for early intervention. Making the decision to register by 12 weeks of pregnancy accounts for 80% of success in preventing maternal mortality,” Amiraeva noted.
She also highlighted dangerous symptoms that should alert expectant mothers: severe headaches, swelling, absence of urination, vomiting, and "floaters" in the eyes.
Women with chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular, kidney, and endocrine disorders, are considered to be at increased risk. Some of them, despite medical contraindications, become pregnant and do not undergo regular check-ups with specialists.
“The desire to become a mother exists in every woman. However, safe motherhood begins with pregnancy planning. Both partners should undergo examinations. It is important to regularly attend preventive check-ups, prenatal screenings, and mandatory doctor visits throughout the pregnancy. It is also necessary to improve the quality of medical care by involving obstetricians-gynecologists in ongoing education and professional development,” she added.
As of 2025, the country is experiencing an increase in maternal mortality: 48 cases have been recorded, which amounts to 34.8 per 100,000 live births, a 35.4% increase compared to 2024 (25.7 or 36 cases).
The Ministry of Health notes that the structure of causes of maternal mortality is dominated by extragenital diseases, bleeding, sepsis, and hypertensive disorders.
