Deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh justified his proposal to sell water to neighbors
During a session of the Jogorku Kenesh, Umbetaly Kydyraliev commented on his initiative to introduce a fee for the water that Kyrgyzstan supplies to neighboring countries, as well as the need for compensation for the maintenance of hydroelectric power stations and reservoirs.
The parliamentarian noted that his words were misunderstood in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, where his initiative was interpreted in a distorted manner, including by opposition figures. "Friends from neighboring countries write to me and ask why I expressed myself that way. In fact, this is a matter of geopolitics. If we supply water under existing agreements, then our neighbors should make concessions to us in other areas," he emphasized.
It is worth noting that Kydyraliev previously mentioned that nearly 80% of the resources from Kyrgyzstan's reservoirs go to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and the republic does not receive compensation for its economic losses.
"I reviewed the data and found that about 80% of the water from our reservoirs goes to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. However, these bodies of water require repairs, maintenance, and strengthening of the dams. Our neighbors should cover these losses. This is in line with international norms. For example, the USA pays Canada for water, and Germany pays Sweden," the deputy added.
