A group of HIV-infected patients in hospitals in Kyrgyzstan has appealed for housing from the State Mortgage Company (GMC) without the need to stand in line. Deputy Ulukbek Karybek uulu voiced this appeal at a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh Committee on Labor, Health, Women, and Social Issues.

During the meeting, he inquired about what specific assistance the government provides to people infected with HIV through parenteral means.

First Deputy Minister of Health Aibek Matkerimov noted that the HIV problem has existed for over 20 years. During this period, citizens have repeatedly appealed to government bodies, and one-time compensations have been paid to them.

“Although the Ministry of Health does not have the capability to resolve housing issues, we are negotiating with the GMC and other relevant government agencies. We are also discussing with the Ministry of Finance the possibilities of increasing pensions and providing free education in higher educational institutions with the Ministry of Science,” the official added.

According to him, approximately 1,000 new cases of HIV are recorded in the country each year.

As of today, more than 15,000 cases of HIV infection have been registered in Kyrgyzstan.

It was previously reported that there are about 880 cases of HIV among individuals under 18 years old in the republic, of which 90 percent are children under 14 years old.

According to the Ministry of Health, 52 percent of children were infected while receiving medical services in healthcare institutions from 2006 to 2009, 41 percent were infected vertically from mother to child, and the mode of transmission remains unknown for 7 percent. A total of 136 children have died from this disease.
