"Sign of Wealth": An Item Previously Displayed is Now Appearing at the 'Flea Market' of the Jayil District
Two antique cast iron irons were sold for one thousand five hundred soms each.
Local historian Maxim Podgorny explained that cast iron irons began to be used widely in Kyrgyzstan from the mid-19th century, when settlers from Russia arrived here.
“There were two main types of irons: ‘coal’ irons, equipped with special containers for hot coals, and solid irons, which were heated in an oven or on a stove. Coal irons were used for over a hundred years, until the advent of electricity,” he clarified.
The first electric iron was created in 1882, but for a long time it remained heavy and inconvenient, and could even deliver an electric shock.
In Kyrgyzstan, coal and heating irons were in use until the 1950s. At the beginning of their use, irons were valued for their weight—some could weigh up to 15 kilograms. Cast iron irons also featured artistic designs: they had relief bodies and patterned handles. In the homes of affluent people in Kyrgyzstan before the 1917 revolution, such irons were displayed as a symbol of wealth and luxurious interiors,” the historian added.
