Initial results of the transition to the 12-year model: teachers were not ready for six-year-old children
During the press conference, Professor and Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences Abakir Mamytov emphasized that in Kyrgyzstan, educators had no experience working with six-year-old children, as their education was handled by preschool educators. This led to problems when six-year-olds began entering the first grade.
Bryzgalova noted that in September, children came to schools who were not prepared for the educational program and lacked even basic social skills.
“When children entered schools this year, the Ministry of Education faced the issue that many six-year-olds did not possess the necessary skills for successful learning. There were 25 students in the classes, and in urban schools, the number reached up to 50. Teachers required significant effort to help the children adapt to the school routine, as they were coming to school for the first time and immediately found themselves in the second grade,” she reported.
According to her, parents did not provide teachers with the necessary information about the children's preparation.
“Despite the Ministry of Education asking parents to indicate whether their children were ready for school, whether they had attended preparatory courses in kindergartens or educational centers, many were skeptical about this. As a result, children who were not ready to grasp the educational material, which differs from previous years' programs, entered the second grades. This became one of the problems that educators had to confront in the first quarter. Teachers had to reassess their teaching approaches,” Bryzgalova added.
