Residents of Tatarstan allocated over $320,000 saved for Hajj to the development of their villages
As reported by Tajik press, the initiative was announced by the head of the district, Rabim Gafurzoda. He noted that this voluntary decision was the result of cooperation between local authorities and religious leaders. People were not forced to give up their Hajj or Umrah — they themselves approached community leaders for assistance.
The collected funds will be used for the repair and construction of infrastructure, including roads and bridges, improving electricity supply, as well as supporting kindergartens and other social institutions. The district authorities have instructed local government bodies to keep track of the funds and provide reports on their expenditure.
After public criticism of repeated pilgrimages by President Emomali Rahmon, who urged that funds be directed towards social development and education, such initiatives are becoming increasingly common in Tajikistan.
