The Supreme Court has postponed the consideration of the case of journalist Mahabat Tajibek kyzy
The reason for the postponement was the significant amount of case materials that require additional time for review. The new date for the hearing is set for March 3.
Mahabat Tajibek kyzy, who heads the Temirov LIVE project, was sentenced to six years in prison on charges of "calling for mass riots." Despite being a mother of a minor child, the court rejected the request to suspend the execution of the sentence.
On January 16, 2024, mass arrests took place in the country, resulting in the detention of 11 people associated with the journalistic initiatives Temirov LIVE and "Ayt, Ayt dese." These journalists faced charges of "calling for mass riots" in the context of their professional activities.
On October 10, 2024, the Lenin District Court of Bishkek sentenced Mahabat Tajibek kyzy to six years in prison. Later, on December 18, 2024, the Bishkek City Court upheld this sentence, and on February 25, 2025, the Supreme Court left it unchanged.
In its conclusion, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention confirmed that Kyrgyzstan violated seven articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and six articles of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. It was also established that the detention of Mahabat Tajibek kyzy is a result of her lawful exercise of freedom of speech and journalistic activity, including investigations into corruption.
In response to the findings of the UN Working Group, Mahabat Tajibek kyzy's lawyer submitted a petition to the Supreme Court for a review of the case, citing new circumstances. Activists called on international human rights organizations, journalists, and media representatives, both local and foreign, to attend the court hearing as observers.
