The United Nations has recognized the arrest of the journalist as unlawful

A court hearing has been scheduled for February 2, 2025, at the Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic, which will begin at 10:00 AM. The agenda includes the consideration of a petition from the defense of journalist Mahabat Tajibek kyzy, who was sentenced to six years in prison on charges of "inciting mass riots."

This petition is a response to the findings of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which classified the arrest and detention of Mahabat as arbitrary and in violation of international norms.

The journalist was detained in January 2024 along with colleagues from the Temirov LIVE and "Ait, Ait dese" projects. In October 2024, the Lenin District Court of Bishkek sentenced her to six years in prison, and this decision was subsequently upheld by the Bishkek City Court and the Supreme Court.

Despite the fact that Mahabat Tajibek kyzy is a mother of a minor child, the court denied her request for a deferment of this punishment, although such an option is prescribed by national legislation.

According to the UN's conclusion, the detention of the journalist was a result of her professional activities and the exercise of freedom of speech. The Working Group called for her immediate release, the restoration of her rights, and an investigation into the actions of officials involved in her arrest.

The court hearing will take place at: 205 Toktobolota Abdymomunov Street, Bishkek.
