A group of human rights organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), has called on the government of Kyrgyzstan to immediately release journalist Mahabat Tajibek kyzy. The appeal also includes a demand to implement the recommendations of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.
Mahabat Tajibek kyzy holds the position of director in the anti-corruption projects Temirov Live and Ait Ait Dese. In January 2024, she was detained, and in October of the same year, a court sentenced her to six years in prison on charges of organizing mass riots. The Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan is set to consider the possibility of reopening her case on February 2. If the court makes a positive decision, human rights defenders are demanding her immediate release, compensation for her, and an investigation into all circumstances surrounding her arrest,” the statement notes.
It has also been reported that her husband, Bolot Temirov, who is in exile, was awarded the CPJ International Press Freedom Award in 2025.
