The reduction of poverty levels in Kyrgyzstan is happening extremely slowly. This was reported by Edil Baysalov, Deputy Prime Minister, at a recent joint meeting of the parliamentary groups "Eldik" and "Ala-Too".

Leader of the "Eldik" faction Akylbek Tumonbaev added that parliamentarians invited government members to discuss the implementation of legislation regarding state benefits. He also noted that a draft law was proposed, which provides for the provision of benefits to all children under the age of 12.

According to Baysalov, as a result of the pandemic, the poverty level among the population has increased to 30 percent.

"A person is considered to be living below the poverty line if their annual income is less than 65,000 soms. Last year, this figure was 25.7 percent. Despite the efforts made, the poverty level is decreasing by only 2 percent per year," noted the Deputy Prime Minister.

He also reported that among children under 16, poverty affects 33 percent, which corresponds to 950,000 children living in poverty in Kyrgyzstan.

In conclusion, Edil Baysalov noted that the five-year plan of the Cabinet of Ministers includes measures to reduce the poverty level to 20 percent, while he expressed hope to achieve a mark of 15 percent during this period.
