Toktogon Altybasarova, who raised 150 orphans from besieged Leningrad: A letter united my husband and me
In St. Petersburg, a monument is being built in her honor to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Victory.
Today, a correspondent from Turmush will tell the story of how Toktogon met her husband Musa Abdieva and how their fates intertwined.
In May 2009, the correspondent, along with the akim of the Tyup district, S. Kerimkulov, visited the home of Musa and Toktogon to congratulate them on Victory Day. During the presentation of gifts, Toktogon, being an active and sociable woman, suggested raising a toast, while Musa quietly sat and smiled.
When asked how she met Musa, Toktogon shared her story:
“During the day, I worked as a secretary in the village council, and in the evenings, I took care of the orphans from Leningrad. I monitored their routine and nutrition. When the children fell asleep, I knitted gloves and socks for the soldiers at the front. We sent these items with notes asking them to return alive and victorious. One day, the postman brought me a letter from Red Army soldier Musa Abdieva, who thanked me for the items sent and promised to marry me if he returned. I put that letter in a safe and forgot about it. At the end of 1943, a limping soldier came to us, and he often came to look at me. At that time, I had no time for dates. But on Victory Day, May 9, 1945, when we were all rejoicing, he approached me and whispered, ‘When will you respond to my letter?’ In the evening, as I was heading to the children, I was unexpectedly placed in a carriage, and that’s how I ended up married to Musa. We spent one night at his home, and for the next ten years, we lived next to the children from Leningrad. He is a man of character, a true family man. That letter became the beginning of our life together.”
Turmush — On February 20, 2024, President Sadyr Japarov signed a decree posthumously awarding Toktogon Altybasarova.
